How ratings work

Your rating is a number for how strong you play, calculated from match results in official tournaments. The higher the number, the stronger the player. We use Glicko-2, the same system Lichess uses for online chess.

Starting rating

When you sign up, you choose your estimated level. Your starting rating follows that choice: Beginner 1200, Intermediate 1400, Advanced 1600.

You can change your starting level until you play your first official match.

Provisional rating

For your first 5 official matches, your rating is provisional and marked with a yellow ring. During that time it moves faster, so it quickly reaches a number that fits your skill.

Going up and down

Winning raises your rating, losing lowers it.

How much depends on your opponent. Beating a higher-rated opponent raises it more. Losing to a lower-rated opponent lowers it more.

Only the win or loss counts. The frame difference isn't counted yet.

One rating per game type

  • Overall
  • 8-ball
  • 9-ball
  • 10-ball

You have separate ratings for 8-ball, 9-ball, and 10-ball. Your overall rating is calculated from all your matches, whatever the game, and is the main rating on your profile.

What counts

Only matches in official tournaments, meaning tournaments at verified billiard venues.

Walkovers don't count, because the match wasn't played.

Your rating changes only after the score is confirmed. If a score was recorded wrong, report it to the organizer within 24 hours.

Taking a break

Your rating doesn't drop while you're not playing. But the longer you're away, the less sure the system is about your number, so your rating moves faster when you come back.

The leaderboard only shows players with at least 5 official matches who have played in the last 90 days.
